A fire in Henry Street, Ravenswood, is believed to have begun as a registered burn that got out of control, with five fire tankers tasked to the blaze.
Tasmania Fire Service’s Launceston fire station officer Jaron Oosterloo said two trucks had already been mobilised to attend a motor vehicle accident on Hobblers Bridge Road when they were diverted to attend the vegetation fire.
“We noticed the smoke and flames from this area, we were then re-tasked from that job,” he said.
A light tanker and a medium tanker arrived on the scene supported by the Ravenswood volunteer brigade’s light tanker, medium tanker and heavy tanker.
The fire went into gorse and rapidly grew in size, prompting the burn owner to call the TFS for assistance.
The firefighters used a combination of foam and water to quell the flames in the combustible gorse and stop the spread of the fire.
The fire is now under control but the TFS expects to remain on the scene this afternoon.
UPDATE 1.55PM:
Two Launceston vehicles and two Ravenswood vehicles have arrived at the scene and have begun extinguishing the fire.
A TFS spokeswoman said no more units would be sent to attend the fire at this stage.
No properties have been affected by the fire.
“There are quite a few houses in that area but at this stage there’s no fire impacting any houses, it’s just burning in the bush,” the spokeswoman said.
