Sporting star Ariarne Titmus, who moved from her Launceston home to Brisbane to further her swimming career, said even being nominated for the award was a “very big privilege”.
“To come away with a win, it’s a very prestigious award in Tasmania, so I feel very excited and honoured that I was chosen,” Titmus said.
“It makes me feel excited that all my hard work has paid off.”
“It’s good to get recognition from Tassie even though I don’t live there anymore.”
Titmus was unable to attend the ceremony as the National Swimming Championships started in Brisbane on Sunday.
Her uncle collected the award on her behalf on Saturday evening.
Titmus said she was “very excited” for the championships. She hopes to make the cut for the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
Dr Jessica Manuela received the Premier’s Young Achiever of the Year.
Dr Manuela is an indigenous Tasmanian, who works as a dentist and is dedicated to raising oral health awareness.
She also volunteers, speaking with school students and running community information evenings, and education sessions to improve oral health within Indigenous Communities.
There were 23 finalists across the seven categories.
Speaker of the House of Assembly, Elise Archer, said the awards showcased the outstanding talent of young Tasmanians.
“It’s important that we recognise tomorrow’s leaders and their contributions, and encourage them to pursue their goals,” Ms Archer said.
“The Awards’ Gala Dinner falls within National Youth Week, the largest celebration of young people on the youth calendar,” she said.
“The theme this year is Imagine, Initiate, Inspire, and that’s certainly what our nominees and award winners have done this year.”
