There was carnage on the front straight leading to the infamous hairpin as a jumble of cars came to grief in a log-jam smash on lap two of the scheduled 50-lap race.

The cars and drivers involved in the crash were Will Davison, Simona de Silvestro, Rick Kelly, Garth Tander, Tim Slade, Nick Percat, Tim Blanchard, James Moffat, Scott Pye, James Courtney, Alex Rullo and Taz Douglas.

Damage to some of the Supercar entries was severe with estimates of a possible $5 million repair bill for the teams involved.

A full investigation will be held into the incident that caused the the pile-up as a line of cars negotiated the straight in heavy spray and glare. 

Most of the drivers escaped uninjured although Tekno Autosport’s Davison received medical assistance after being able to get out of his car but was later taken to hospital for precautionary observation.

In a controversial call, race officials awarded the win to Red Bull’s Shane van Gisbergen after the two-lap event was brought to an end under safelty car control with half the field missing.

Jamie Whincup took second place and Craig Lowndes third.

Full points were awarded by race stewards adding to the controversy after one of the biggest crashes and shortest races in Symmon’s history.
