The shift to the new lights is part of a regional push, with the Meander Valley, George Town, Break O'Day, Northern Midlands and West Tamar Councils also participating in the replacement of a further 4300 globes across Northern Tasmania.
Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the payback on investment in the lights would be achieved in just seven years based on current energy prices.
“These lights are significantly more energy efficient than their traditional counterparts and are much more environmentally friendly,” he said.
“We're installing them in what we call our 'minor road lighting' areas, which are typically residential areas across the city. It's an exciting project to see being rolled out in Northern Tasmania."
Launceston is the first council to install the new lights and will soon boast the largest roll-out of LED street lamps of any municipality.
