The Saints will host the Swans for their initiation into the competition on Saturday after switching from the NEFU in the off-season.
“We are expecting them to come out hard as they have said they want to make a mark on the competition but we’ll also be doing the same,” Young said.
“I think it will be a very good contest… I think we have filled a few voids from last season and we are a lot more structured across the ground.”
Both Young and Swans veteran Callan Leonard, who has been with the St Helens-based club for 13 years, said a straight-up win is achievable.
“It’s pretty exciting for the club and all the players and we think we can be competitive,” Leonard said.
“The footy is much quicker (compared to the NEFU) but the side we have in this year is much faster than we’ve had in the past couple.
“We’ve recruited well so all we have to do is go out there and play well as a team.”
