The simulated exercises included the apprehension of armed offenders, counter-terrorism operations and response to emergency situations. Hundreds of officers took part under the instruction of special operations officers and other trained Tasmania Police professionals.
Senior Constable and Northern District training officer Paul Bennett said the exercises were confronting but necessary and aimed to test current police response strategies.
“The unintended consequence of this particular awareness training is that it is going to provide officers the opportunity to conduct their day to day business in a far safer manner,” he said.
“It doesn’t matter whether they’re going to execute a search warrant, are searching for a family violence offender who might be high risk or a routine traffic stop – there were tactics within the training over the past five weeks that officers will take away with them and continue to use.”
