The pair were about to begin their morning run when Ms Powell heard screeching from the bushes.
“We thought it was a bird,” she said.
The strange noise didn’t sit well with the women so Ms Mackean crawled into the bush to locate the source.
“Mum found a box, pulled it out and there were these two kittens in there, they were soaking wet,” Ms Powell said.
“It was heartbreaking, they were not moving.”
Ms Powell said she was completely shocked at the discovery. The women wrapped the kittens in Ms Powell’s jumper and attempted to dry them.
Both kittens sustained serious injuries.
“I was trying to gently massage around their heart area because they were stone cold,” Ms Powell said.
The women contacted Just Cats Tasmania director Rachel Beech who advised them to take the kittens to a vet.
One kitten had a broken back and had to be euthanised on Wednesday morning, the other is fighting to survive.
