NEST Energy showroom in Launceston aims to demonstrate innovative energy solutions for homes.
Director Mark Barnett said the aim of opening a showroom in Launceston was to refresh the conversation on solar energy.
“The big decision for us, was how we change the domestic sales debate from a price question to what the customers energy needs are,” Mark said.
“A lot of customers who come in say; ‘I want solar, I’ve already got a quote and I want yours to be more competitive’.
“As soon as you participate in that game it is a race to the bottom, so we decided we would create a showroom that invites a conversation about what you actually need, what your power requirements are and it may be the case that solar is not a viable option.
“In order to have that conversation about people's power needs you need to have a good mix of on offer from heating and cooling, LED lighting to solar and batteries.”
The company has taken the step into the residential sector, after feedback from its usually large-scale, bespoke projects.
Mark said clients who commissioned the projects would often ask how the model of energy efficiency could be converted to their homes.
“We saw that there was clearly a demand in the domestic space for something that was very specific to a customers needs,” Mark said
“For us renewables has always been a no-brainer it’s really been a question of timing and product price points as economics is a huge driver for people.”
”However having said that the other driver for people is social and environmental responsibility and so at one end you have people who want to save money on their utilities and the other side is people who have an emotional investment and want to make an environmental choice and investment for their future.”
“The thing is, solar and batteries have now passed the economic tipping point that make them cheaper than grid power, but getting the product mix right requires a deep conversation about your specific needs”.
“We enjoy a conversation about energy needs and as soon as we understand those needs we can tailor make a package to suit,” Mark said.
Everything is catered for in house from the consultation expertise and quoting process to the installation.
The other side of Nest Energy is the engineers, designers and electricians who will advise on the correct product mix which incorporates a range of energy efficient options for Tasmanian homes and businesses.

Commercial, agriculture and viticulture
With a vision of renewable energy for Tasmania, Nest Energy are turning their sights to the agricultural industry.
“As agriculture intensifies so too does energy consumption and its associated costs,” director Mark Barnett said.
“Increased access to irrigation infrastructure and more water, results in a lot of pumps and irrigation systems which run from late spring to early autumn when the sun is at its best – Solar for irrigators is an awesome product.”
“We are currently perfecting ground mounted systems that can be put in paddocks, so we can give farmers a sense of energy independence.”
The obvious and practical use of solar power generation is to offset existing power bills which are uncontrolled, unpredictable and the only thing we know for sure is that they will continue to increase.
“What solar generation does is address all those things. You know exactly how much it costs, you can predict it into the future and lock that price into your budget. It absolutely de-risks an agricultural input which is currently full of risk.”.
The new battery price equation also makes it very attractive for dairy farmers given the consistency of their power consumption, especially so those who irrigate as a solar system output will be more than double in the irrigation period versus winter.
Agriculture is an industry of great opportunity, we have some very smart farmers who are keen to understand the opportunities not just with solar but also with hydro and pumped hydro scenarios which haven’t previously been contemplated.
We say at Nest Energy “if it moves we can create power from it”, water is one of those great opportunities which is just coming into focus now that energy costs are seen as forever increasing.
