Death Penalty
COLIN Knowles (The Examiner, February 27) advocates for the death penalty to be available in Australia and cites the case of a 100kg male killing a defenseless baby. An extremely emotive case that will, no doubt, be supported by many as compelling evidence that the death penalty is needed.

However, and notably, Mr Knowles gave no details of that case and therefore it has no credibility as supporting evidence for the reinstatement of the death penalty. There are many factors involved in cases of murder (or any other crime) and they need to be taken into account.
Regardless, should society start killing those who kill then it becomes no better than the murderer. It matters not the method used as killing a human being is killing a human being. Rather than having a barbaric death penalty it would be a far better thing to remove from society forever, by means of incarceration for life with no chance of release, anyone found guilty of committing a premeditated murder.
