On the first day of competition at Sydney Olympic Park, Raphaela Corney (3.50 metres) and Lily Holloway (3.15m) claimed gold and silver in the under-17 girls’ pole vault.
With all the medallists getting to stand on the dais used at the 2000 Olympic Games, Julia Direen added another silver in the under-17 girls’ hammer with a throw of 47.81m.
Sam Walker won gold in the under-16 boys para 200m.
The UTas member doubled up and also established an Australian under-16 T38 record in running a huge personal best of 12.50 in the 100m.
Other gold medals followed on Monday when Alice Randall dominated the under-18 women’s 5000m walk, storming home in 25:08.91. Anna Blackwell (26:57.40) finished fifth in the under-17 event.
The combined junior and open championships feature a total of 546 events and run until Sunday with Tasmanian Institute of Sport athletics coach Susan Andrews delighted with the state’s start to the event.
A team of 76 athletes has been named to represent Tasmania including Jack Hale, Hamish and Huw Peacock and Deon Kenzie.

The King Islander clocked 31:05 as Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor won in 28:24.
