That’s how Launceston businessmen Charles Beaumont and Brett Charlton describe the 1990 Ford Econovan they plan to drive from Adelaide to Cairns later this year in the name of cancer research.
The Econovan will be one of about 200 paddock bashers taking part in May 27’s Shitbox Rally, which has raised more than $10 million for the Cancer Council in seven years.
While the MOT-failing monstrosity may be lacking in the luxury stakes, it does have something atop its roof no other vehicle has - a Tasmanian devil on a surfboard.
Crafted by renowned Tasmanian sculptor Folko Kooper, Errol the surfing devil will be auctioned off at a fundraising function at Nyllavert Gardens on Saturday.
Mr Charlton said the pair were hoping to raise $20,000 at the function, which will feature live music, Tasmanian wine and beer and local celebrities Darren Alexander and Brian Carlton.
“We're going to take Errol with us all the way up (to Cairns) and then clean him up and send him back,” Mr Charlton said.
“We're thinking that will sit nicely in a funky museum in Hobart or a really awesome craft beer bar.”
