Recovering from the loss of three early wickets, patient batting from the Hurricanes’ middle and lower order had the home side posting 221, extending their overall lead to 289, and setting Devonport a challenging fourth-innings run chase.
Devonport made the best possible start to Day 2, with Sam Fogg (3-32) trapping Nick Revell (0) lbw with the first ball of the day.
The Hurricanes were 3/2, and vulnerable with a lead of just 70 runs, but the Hurricanes dug in, with nightwatchman Tyler Johns (17) and Aydan Costelloe (21) fighting through the next 23 overs to add 48 valuable runs.
Costelloe fell to Sam Robinson (2-51), but Johns fought on, adding a further 24 runs with Brady Yates before Robinson brought his 148-minute innings to an end.
At 5-74 the Hurricanes were only leading by 142 runs, and still vulnerable with plenty of time left in the game.
But they put a high price on their final five wickets, starting with a 39-run sixth wicket partnership between Yates (47) and Charlie King (54).
Yates fell to Anish Paraam (1-18), but King posted his maiden first grade half-century in a crucial 62-run seventh wicket partnership with James Odgers (48).
King eventually fell to Andre de Lange (1-14), but Odgers batted intelligently with the tail to add 46 vital runs for the final three wickets. Odgers was the last man out, caught by Miles Barnard off the bowling of Chris Lindsay (3-24).
The equation was simple for Devonport - they needed to score 290 runs from a minimum of 103 overs to claim the premiership.
The Orions were faced with a tricky seven-over session prior to stumps, and they were immediately on the back foot, with Andre de Lange (0) and Brent Lawler (0) falling to Tyler Johns (2-8) in the opening over.
Miles Barnard (two not out) and Anish Paraam (six) safely negotiated the next few overs, but in a bitter blow the Orions lost Paraam in the penultimate over, caught by Brady Yates off the bowling of Shaun Redman (1-3). Barnard and nightwatchman Sam Robinson (four not out) survived the final eight balls and Devonport finished the day 3/12, trailing by 278 runs with seven wickets in hand.
