The proposed new location would capitalise on the existing former call centre building at 10 Techno Park Drive, developing facilities around it to include a new multi-purpose gymnasium, performing arts hall, and sports field.
The application proposes refurbishing the existing building into the main school, with road access upgraded down the side of the property and a total of 81 car parking spaces made available.
Oakwood is a primary and secondary non-government school with three existing Tasmanian campuses in Newstead, Devonport and Hobart.
The school is affiliated with Plymouth Brethren Christian Church and has an emphasis on learning as a way of life, and providing practical, skills-based training.
It has a partnership with Glenvale Education to provide registered, certificate-level qualifications for students who have completed year 12 studies, including certificates in business, marketing and accounting.
A spokesman for Oakwood School said the proposed new campus, if approved by the City of Launceston Council, is planned to eventually supersede the existing Newstead campus on Waterworth Lane.
Oakwood’s Newstead campus hosts about 70 students. The proposed new campus is projected to have capacity for up to 100 students, with room for further expansion.
“The new school, if approved by the local council, will replace Oakwood [in Newstead] because it is bigger and there is more room for expansion over time,” the spokesman said.
“It’ll enable the campus to be state-of-the-art, depending on council approval … to open for 2018.”
The spokesman said the Devonport campus will continue to operate independently.
The development application is open for submissions on the City of Launceston website until April 10.
