Future of Launceston
IF LAUNCESTON wants to ‘create a new living city’ (The Examiner, March 7) then the City of Launceston needs to look seriously at the facilities it already offers. It is no good building boardwalks, walking tracks, barbecues and exercise facilities then make no provision for toilets or close them in the late afternoon just when people and families want to use them.

There are several areas that are regularly used by families and groups for picnics, eat outs and games; St George’s Square, Brickfields, Royal Park and in the West Tamar municipality, Tailrace Park. Families want to use them after work and when school is finished, alas, toilets closed just when everyone arrives. In future, new buildings in Launceston city centre should contain apartments or hotel accommodation as well as commercial enterprises. Melbourne is a good example and this encourages eateries and other stores to be open. Come on Launceston, we can do better.

Meadow Mews
I would like to alert users and shoppers who park in the Meadow Mews car park. I parked in the Meadow Mews car park while completing a grocery shop. I arrived just before 9am and had left by 10.15am.
Later, I collected my grandson from daycare and took him out to Meadow Mews, parked in the car park and went into the shopping centre, I was there for about 30 minutes. On returning to my car there was an infringement notice on the windscreen advising that I had been in the car park for longer than is allowed (oddly enough my car wasn't even parked in the same spot as earlier in the day).
I contacted the parking company that patrols this area, they have fortunately cancelled the fine. My advice to shoppers who find that they might have to visit this car park more than once in a day, keep any receipts. I realise that there are some people who may park longer than allowed, but I am not one of them. I have been shopping in this area for quite a number of years and have never had a problem before.

Surprised
WHILE having a quiet beer in my local watering hole recently, two Japanese gents were having a beer and talking to one another in their own language. Our very much Australian female bar attendant, Nat, walked over and started talking to them in Japanese. It was brilliant, they nearly fell off their seats, they laughed and when asked said they were quite surprised. Well done Nat.

Wind and Solar
THERE are some unforeseen consequences emerging from the Renewable Energy Target. To start with affordable electricity and reliability of supply were not seen as being even more important than reducing carbon. In addition, having misled the public by using the word 'target' instead of 'subsidy' and labeling fossil fuels as dirty it turns out wind and solar depend on these fuels plus expensive strengthening of the network. It is to be hoped that RET advocates have a lot of difficulty preventing these requirements being funded from their subsidy, or should I say target.

Medical Fees
I HAVE made an appointment with a medical practitioner at a Launceston medical practice. As a reminder to that appointment I received a text message advising me of the appointment and that there would be, fees for non- attendance. Questions: can I charge the doctor a fee if he/she keeps me waiting? Can I charge fees if their service gives me incorrect or no results? I understand that if they stuff up I could complain to the medical board, if I did so would I be guaranteed a fair hearing and if not is there an independent ombudsman.
