At Monday’s City of Launceston meeting Ald McKendrick asked the council to support his Notice of Motion to enter into negotiations with Cricket Tasmania which culminate in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding.
He said additional content within the MOU should include, but not be limited to, Big Bash T20, Women's Big Bash League, Matador Cup, Sheffield Shield and international cricket opportunities.
“There seems to be some positives with Cricket Tasmania recognising that we have a role to play with Tasmanian cricket, for all Tamsnaians,” Ald McKendrick said.
“Ricky Ponting has held two games out there now … we've had the Women's Big Bash League out there and anybody who went out to see that saw the success.”
He said it was imperative that the council supported a push for at least one or two Big Bash matches, even under the current number played in Tasmania.
“Or if they expand the Big Bash League as they are talking about doing, we have to be in there. We have a $60 to $70 million stadium that is crying out for cricket and I believe Tasmanians all the way through from Scottsdale or further and all the way to Circular Head will come to enjoy the cricket and I know the cricket fanatics in Hobart will come too.”
The motion was passed unanimously and will see a working group from council progress the matters.
