The Dockers submitted the application for the TSL’s second-tier competition after the club’s full withdrawal from the NWFL over struggling to field numbers for senior and reserves teams.
AFL Tasmania said the parties exhausted all other options after exploring an appropriate competition for Burnie's under 18 team.
“The NWFL did consider options, including playing under 18s on a Sunday alongside other junior footy,” TSL state manager Carl Saunder said. “Unfortunately due to logistics and ground availability, this wasn’t possible.”
The TSL will release a revised fixture that promises to reduce the number of games Burnie plays to other teams.
Saunder is considering a “percentage of win/loss to work out finals qualification”.
Burnie’s inclusion in the Development League will ensure an eight-team competition following Prospect’s exit at the end of last season.
