In Parliament on Thursday, Infrastructure Minister Rene Hidding introduced legislation to take action against the camper vans, such as vehicle hire operator Wicked Campers. 

The legislation, if passed, would mean vehicles found to be not meeting advertising standards, and have not put in effort to fix this, could have their vehicle de-registered. 

Tasmania is not the first state to take action against the vehicles, which, in some cases, display slogans degrading and insulting to women. 

“Clean up your act, or we will clean it up for you,” Mr Hidding said. 

“There is no doubt that some of the slogans on these vans are completely unacceptable, and clearly promote negative attitudes to women.”

Mr Hidding said Tasmania needed to make a statement that, as a society, it rejected misogyny within the community. 

"While a minority of people might try to pass them off as a joke, there is no doubt some of the slogans are completely unacceptable," he said in Parliament.

Support, Help, Empowerment executive officer Alina Thomas said the changes would send a message that degrading comments were not accepted in Tasmania. 

“What they can do is set a precedent of what’s acceptable and that’s certainly contrary to what we’re trying to promote in terms of safe communities and communities that are respectful towards women,” Ms Thomas said. 

“We don’t want to see values that are promoting the objectification of women and that victim-blaming approach.

“I think it’s really great that in the community in general, that there’s backlash and that people are standing up and saying that these are not the kinds of messages that we want our children to be hearing.” 

Greens leader Cassy O’Connor said the party would support the proposed legislation. 

“Tasmanian women and girls will welcome moves to ban from the State's roads vehicles which display offensive, sexist signage,” Ms O’Connor said.

“The most obvious example of this in recent times has been Wicked Campers' vehicles, which are often emblazoned with revolting images and words that demean women and girls.” 

Anyone who sees an offensive camper van would be able to make a complaint about the vehicle and, if it is upheld against the advertising code, its registration will be canceled.
