It was a thriving city where industry boomed, river trade flourished and people travelled by tram.
There, with his real estate-minded son Norman Bushby, they decided to buy a real estate agency, Alfred Field, and in 1914 they started Bushby & Co Estate Agents.
Norman, who worked at C.J. Weedon Pty Ltd, later left that firm to join his father full-time at Bushby & Co.
When George died in 1938, after working in the business for 24 years, and then Norman died suddenly in 1942, the business was left to Norman’s wife and the Bushby family to operate.
George’s second son, Doug, came into the business that year and the youngest, Max, in 1945.
After half-a-century at 53 George Street a decision was made to buy a bigger and better office at 86 George Street.
Phillip Bushby was invited to join his uncles in 1969; in 1972, Peter Bushby also joined the family business.
In 1988, Mark Bushby joined his brother Phillip. Together, they joined with the First National Group in 1989 to become a leading force in the Tasmanian real estate industry.
As an independent agency, we are firmly focused on continuing to service the people of our community as we have done so for a hundred years.

Bushby & Co continued to expand the business and improve its services to the Launceston community, and its advertising has long been a mainstay of The Examiner’s property guide both in print and now online.
In 1990, with a team of 25 people, Bushby & Co purchased 113-117 Cimitiere Street, part of which it sold to the developers of Cimitiere House while designing and building new offices on site.
Now situated at 117 Cimitiere Street, this state-of-the-art building was built for the 21st Century.
“We have illustrated that the Bushby Property Group has faith in the Tasmanian economy, is sure of its position in the marketplace, and has created an enviable environment for its staff,” director Phillip Bushby said.
“We have made marketing and innovation a major focus of their business to ensure that no matter when or where consumers search for real estate, Bushby Property Group’s brand will always be seen.
“And we have long been at the forefront of digital media initiatives to make sure our clients have the best opportunity to buy or sell their property.
“As an independent agency, we are firmly focused on continuing to service the people of our community as we have done so for a hundred years.”
