The Blues batted first but could only manage 116, with Scott Blizzard (46) and Brodie Stokes (34) the only batsmen to look convincing against a four-pronged Black Caps pace attack.
Penguin recruit Will Dau (5-33) was the standout bowler for the home side, claiming a maiden first grade five-wicket haul.
A fine innings from opener Andrew Van Tatenhove (80) had the Black Caps overhauling the Wynyard total within 25 overs, and the home side pushed on to finish the day at 6/236.
Blues bowlers Kade Bellinger and Ben Licandro claimed two wickets each on a long afternoon for the visitors.

The Hurricanes’ batted first on a dry pitch and were skittled for just 73, with Adam Drinkwell (25) the leading scorer, while Dion Parsons (4-21) was the pick of the Latrobe bowlers.
The Demons also found the going tough with the bat, scraping to a first innings total of 98 thanks to a patient innings from Neil Flack (47).
Spinner Brady Yates (3-19) and Shaun Redman (2-9) were the Hurricanes’ standout bowlers.
A dramatic day finished with the Hurricanes 1-16 in their second innings, still trailing Latrobe by nine runs.
Ladder leaders Devonport are in control of their clash against Sheffield.
The Mountaineers batted first but were all out for 90, as Orions’ opening bowlers Chris Lindsay (6-34) and Sam Fogg (4-21) made great use of the swinging ball.
Richard Miles (26) was the leading Sheffield batsman as the visitors struggled against the Orions pace attack.
Devonport then batted through the rest of day one to finish at 4/185, holding a 95-run first innings lead.
Opener Miles Barnard (62) got the innings off to a great start, while Anish Paraam (65 not out) and Brent Mullett (45) pressed home the Orions’ advantage in the final session.
Paraam and Tyler Dell (2 not out) will return to the crease on day two.
