On Thursday, Crime Stoppers launched its online reporting tool to help Tasmanians to solve crimes.
The latest addition to the Crime Stoppers website allows users to anonymously list details such as crime type, offender description and the offender’s vehicle.
Chairwoman Amanda Castray said no IP addresses were recorded in the system, meaning no personal information could be tracked.
“This is everybody’s opportunity and responsibility to keep our community safe,” Ms Castray said.
“We’d love to see more crime reported in Tasmania and therefore more crime solved.”
Tasmania is the last state to have access to an online system, but in other jurisdictions, it has led to a spike in reports of up to 60 per cent.
Tasmania Police Commissioner Darren Hine said the website was about sharing information of a crime, rather than reporting a crime.
“In the end, we’re actually assisting the community – so we can live in a better place because that information is getting to us,” Commissioner Hine said.
“I’d encourage members of the public – if they see something, say something.”
Information on crimes can still be given by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
