Salmon Farms
COULD someone please explain and tell me where my logic is flawed: politicians and some unions are saying they are all for protecting jobs in the salmon industry. Given the multimillion-dollar profits that the "current" salmon farming operations make under their current leases, how are any current jobs actually in jeopardy? No one seems to have a firm handle on just how many jobs will be created if expansions into Okehampton and Storm Bay go ahead. I hear very few people saying they want the actual industry shut down, in fact most support it and realise the economic value it brings to the state’s economy in regional areas. Given all of that, the Macquarie Harbour issue is a major concern and gives little confidence that the same mistakes won't be repeated with the proposed expansion areas into Okehampton and Storm bays.

Same Sex Marriage
I AM intrigued as to why the homosexual lobby considers that the proposed federal government plebiscite on same-sex marriage is ‘hateful plebiscite’. In this regard if the plebiscite simply asks the question “Are you in favour of the 1961 Marriage Act being extended to include same sex couples – yes/no?” without any potentially unpleasant for or against arguments. How can it be hateful? It should be noted that the 1961 Marriage Act is federal legislation and can only be changed or amended by an act of federal parliament.

Taswater
PETER Gutwein was spot on in his condemnation of Tasmanian councils’ efforts over the years in water and sewerage provisions. Too often they opted for the cheapest provision with one overriding concern - to keep rates as low as possible. We are now reaping the reward of that cheap provision with boil water alerts and polluted waterways. All Taswater dividends should be directed to righting problems, but the state will need to also become financially involved. Problems will not go away but magnify with time.
