In contrast to last year’s agonising one-wicket loss, it was a one-sided affair at Bellerive Oval as the three-time state premiers romped to an eight-wicket win with eight overs to spare.
Former Tassie Roar player Veronica Pyke was the Demons’ destroyer, claiming 2-5 off her four overs with the ball and an unbeaten 42 off 32 deliveries with the bat to see her side to their fourth consecutive title.
Undefeated in Greater Northern cricket for two years and eager to avenge last season’s heartbreak on the same stage, South started well when captain Belinda Wegman won the toss, but that was about as good as it got.
Electing to bat, the Knights lost Caitlyn Webster in an opening Pyke wicket maiden and struggled for momentum from then on.
Wegman (27 off 25) and Courtney Webb (24 off 34) offered the only real resistance, claiming three boundaries apiece, before both fell to Kirsten Allen (2-19).
The total of 5-89 off their 20 overs never looked enough although a minor miracle looked possible when both Demons openers were dispatched with the score at 2-12.
Angela Green (3) and Bernadette Doyle (4) were bowled by Lisa Battle and Stacey Norton-Smith respectively before an unbeaten 81-run partnership between Pyke and captain Belinda Page (40 off 31) saw the Demons to their second eight-wicket win of the weekend having seen off Clarence in Saturday’s semi-final.
Wegman’s brother Nathan was in the New Town team which beat Burnie in the men’s decider.
Bucks were without star batsman Jake Hancock who was on Sheffield Shield duty with the Tigers but all seven batsmen, including Wegman, made double figures as they scored 5-139. Joe Randall was player of the match for his 38 not out.
Aydan Costelloe top scored with 41 as the Hurricanes, who defeated reigning statewide premiers Riverside, in the semi-final, batted out their 20 overs but fell 23 runs short.
