Launching a new safety campaign this weekend, RSAC Tasmania chairman Jim Cox said it was important to come up with new ways of getting the message out there.
“Everybody knows you should not use your phone while you are driving but the problem is they continue to do it,” he said.
“Inattention and distraction was a contributing factor in about a quarter of serious road crash casualties in the past five years. We need a way to remind people – no one can drive and use their phone at the same time, it’s never safe to do.”
The latest safety push is part of an overall campaign to reduce the state’s road fatalities.
“It’s an ongoing thing, it’s all about that ‘towards zero’ goal – hopefully we can eventually get the message through and save some lives,” Mr Cox said.
The penalty for using a mobile phone while driving in Tasmania is $300 and three demerit points.
