The winner of the main event, the classic women’s racewear, was Launceston nurse Sarah Buller.
“It doesn’t feel real, you always try to wear the best you can and always hope that you can win but that doesn’t always happen,” she said.
Ms Buller took a step away from her traditional race attire – black, red and white – and decide to go with something different this year.
“Everything is new, my hat is from Carrie Jenkinson Millinery, my dress was from Forever New, I bought my cape online, I bought my bag from Strandbags, my shoes online, my earrings from Lovisa and my beautiful makeup was from Olivia Jones,” she said.
“I always strive to be different with my fashion and just enjoy myself and I don’t really get to dress up being a nurse so this is my one day a year.”
She won a trip to Hong Kong and $5000 spending money, but said the prize “hadn’t sunk in yet.”
Runner-up Laura Turner was inspired to sign-up for the competition as a last minute celebration before moving from Launceston to Melbourne to be a pilot with Jetstar.
“I raided my Great-Nan and my Nan’s closets. So from head-to-toe pretty much I am in their clothes, this is the dress that my Nan left her wedding in and all the pearls, the gloves and the shoes were my Great-Nans,” Miss Turner said.
“I bought the hat to match at the millinery parade … it’s quite sentimental and feels special to win in family clothing.”
Tasmanian Truffles owner Henry Terry, of Deloraine, was the best dressed man and won a trip to Phuket.
“I wasn’t initially going to go in it but [my sister] was pretty keen on the chance of a holiday and made me go in, she made final approvals on everything,” he said.
“I have no ideas what brands I am wearing but Routley’s in Launceston really helped me out."
Richmond’s Alycia Hall took out the millinery section, with a stunning creation by Miss Haidee Millinery.
“The inspiration was ‘summer cup’, bright and colourful, and she has tried to make it in keeping with the florals to match my dress as well,” Ms Hall said. “I do like coming to the races but it was my first time at Fashions on the Field in Launceston.”
