Marine Police have been proactive this summer checking recreational fishers over the summer period.
However, a number of offences were recorded in the past few weeks.
“It’s great to see so many people out and about being safe and enjoying their fishing – but unfortunately we’re still seeing a percentage of people who keep under size fish caught or take more than their legal catch limits,” Sgt Rod Stacey said.
Last weekend police targeted recreational rock lobster fishers and located a vessel that had a number of under-sized animals on board.
The lobster and the vessel were seized by police.
This was only one of a number of apprehensions made over that weekend.
“Apart from impacting on our future fish stocks – people illegally fishing risk substantial fines and seizures of their fishing gear and vessels,” Sgt Stacey said.
Sgt Stacey said it was important the public were vigilant to ensure police can proactively target hot spots or illegal activity around Tasmania.
Information that can be useful include the time and location, car or boat registration numbers and any other descriptions.
Anyone with information about illegal fishing activities are encouraged to contact Fish Watch on the 24-hr hotline 0427 655 557.
