Founder Tom Powell, a proud Waramanga man from NSW’s Central West, described Red Dust Healing as a self-evaluating awareness program, derived from an Aboriginal perspective.
“But it’s not just about Aboriginal people – it’s for everybody and designed that way,” he said. “It’s about giving individuals tools on how to deal with the hurt, anger, stress, anxiety, fear in their lives. Things around understanding where our rejection comes from - rejection as in abuse, neglect, abandonment, domestic violence, grief and loss.”
Mr Powell spoke to guests about how to deal with patterns of violence and neglect using a tree analogy. “I’ve worked closely with different Aboriginal communities and spent 14 years working with the Department of Juvenile Justice in NSW,” he said.
The forum was organised by Colony 47’s Aboriginal Community Pathways, in association with the Aboriginal Elders Council of Tasmania.
