Detective Inspector Darren Hopkins said the St Helens amnesty held across Saturday and Sunday at the local high school had been a success.
“We were very pleased with the response from the public,” he said.
“That’s 54 guns and quite a significant amount of ammunition off the street now.
“We’re looking at hosting some more around the district. The more information we can get out about firearm registration the better.”
Detective Inspector Hopkins said while people could walk into any police station at any time to hand over firearms, the general public responded well to scheduled amnesties.
“There seems to be a stigma around walking into a police station,” he said.
“If you’re not comfortable, just give us a call and we’d be happy to come and seize firearms.”
Those wanting to hand over firearms to be destroyed, registered or unregistered, are able to do so without penalty.
