Rowers across both genders and all age groups combined to produce outstanding results throughout 2016-17 and the Launceston-based club was duly confirmed as winners of both the state pennant and Hydro Cup.
President Reg Green said a long season began with training in the depths of winter and land-based fitness sessions comprising cycling, weights, cardio, and “the mind numbing” ergo with athletes supported by a dedicated team of coaches.
“Without these unselfish people volunteering their time throughout the year NERC rowing community would not exist in its current form,” Green said.
“These coaches volunteer their personal resources and forgo family time during the week and weekends to enable athletes across club demographics to compete in their chosen categories.
“The parents of younger athletes are also an important cog in the wheel, for without their support, the coaches’ efforts are in vain.
“Athletes would not have the same competitive edge without pressure from those who have trained along side them and so their selections in state and club crews are due as much to the efforts of those who have missed out, as to those who have been successful.”
The rowers’ next focus will be on the nationals championships in Sydney from March 25 to April 2.
“They will be keen to back up last year as a fitter, stronger and more experienced group under North Esk Rowing Club colours and also in Tasmanian crews,” Green added.
Established in 1899, North Esk have inhabited three homes during their history and the 140-strong membership includes junior, senior, masters, para rowers and dragon boaters.
