Ian Johnstone, Ben Carpenter and Pat Fitzgerald will leave the state this week to take part in the 19.7 kilometer solo swim.
Mr Johnstone said nearly 4000 people participate in the event, making it one of the largest ocean swims in the world.
“About three years ago I had trouble swimming 50 metres, I’d actually have to hold on to the pool lane,” he said. “I took up swimming quite late in life, I’m 56 now, but i love it. It really makes you start the day on a positive when you’re up at 5.30am and done some exercise.”
The men hope to swim the distance in about seven hours.
