Members of the Heritage Protection Society Tasmania have launched an appeal against the approved redevelopment of Launceston’s CH Smith site.

The grounds of the appeal to the Resource Management & Planning Appeal Tribunal, put forward by PW Reynolds, is over the Heritage Council’s decision to allow demolition of parts of the store at 22 Charles Street.
“The internal structures (timber floors, beam, and posts) are an integral part of the cultural heritage significance of the place and are permitted to be demolished contrary to good conservation practice,” said PW Reynolds.
“Prudent and feasible alternatives exist to provide sufficient floor space for offices on the amalgamated development site.”
Developer Errol Stewart said it was “disappointing that Lionel Morell, John Green and PW Reynolds see fit to challenge the Heritage Council decision but that’s life so we go to the tribunal for hearing”.
“It will not stop the development. We will abide by the umpire decision and it will go forward. So it is a small delay in the scheme of things,” Mr Stewart said.
The appeal was lodged on February 14, the final day for submissions.
