University of Tasmania will join seven inaugural entrants in an Australian Rugby Union-sanctioned National Sevens University Series.
Thousands of visitors from Queensland, New South Wales, ACT, and South Australia are also expected to converge on Launceston for the historic opening round on August 26-27 at the University of Tasmania Stadium.
The development marks a significant milestone for women’s sport in Tasmania following Australia’s gold in the Rio Olympic sevens.
Launceston students will be eligible for half of the spots on the UTas roster while further trials will be held during the state’s club Autumn Sevens carnival from March 10.
“The NSUS is another step forward for women’s sport both within our University and our country more broadly,” UTas provost professor Mike Calford said.
“We’re proud to be part of a national movement creating and progressing pathways for elite female athletes.”
