The Russian-born Australian went up against Japan’s Kyoka Okamura and was pushed to three-sets but got on top of the challenger to win 6-7, 6-4, 7-5.
Another highlight from women’s round one matches on Tuesday included the performance from Australian Olivia Rogowska who defeated the fifth seed in Russia’s Anastasia Pivovarova in three sets.
Rogowska won the first set 6-3 before falling in the second 6-1; but she came through in the final set to win a thriller 7-5.
In the men’s, Blaz Rola took down one of Australia’s top hopes in the men’s draw in Andrew Whittington in three sets to move onto the second round.
The Slovenian talent who is currently number 260 in the world, won his match 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 in just under three hours over the highly-fancied Whittington.
