Choose a position that has moist, well-drained soil in full sun. 

Cover lightly, firm down and keep moist.

Seed takes about three to six weeks to germinate.

It can be beneficial to soak seeds in warm water overnight prior to planting.

During the germination stage, keep the soil moist, as it must never be allowed to dry out or the seeds will die.

Space plants at about 10 centimetres apart to enable air to circulate, as mildew could be a problem with over-crowding.  

Parsley attracts bees and other nectar-feeding insects, and little goldfinches can be seen feasting on the seed heads.   

The green or French bean is an edible, podded variety of the common American bean.

Beans are a valuable crop to grow in the garden as they improve the fertility and physical condition of the soil. Nitrogen is added to the soil by the beneficial bacteria in the nodules that grow on the roots of the beans.

All varieties of beans are vulnerable to frost or very hot weather, however, with careful seasonal planting most can be grown in a wide range of climates and soils.

Beans love lime, so dig in a good dressing before sowing.  

Place a complete fertiliser slightly beneath the seed, but never put in direct contact with seed.

Sow French bean seed in pairs five centimetres deep in shallow drills, 75 centimetres between rows. 

Water often in dry weather and hill rows up around the beans, at flowering, to stop them from toppling  over. Excessive use of nitrogenous fertiliser should be avoided.

Continue to plant climbing spinach, zucchini, chives, chard, celery, cucumber, Brussels sprouts, silverbeet and spring onions. Sow seeds of carrot, parsnip, radish, lettuce, swedes.

Trim repeat flowering modern roses to attain an autumn flush of blooms. Spray with Yates Lime Sulfur to control sap-sucking pests, rust and powdery mildew.  

Apply at the lower dilution rate and spray the bushes thoroughly. The autumn flowers are often the best quality of the entire season because of the cooler weather. Keep a close watch for fungal diseases and treat as soon as noticed.

Cut back long wisteria stems to four or six buds unless extensions are required, when only the last 45 centimetres are removed.
