The Waterhouse-trained Kinnersley was runner-up in the 2010 Derby behind Geegees Blackflash who went on to win $1.3 million without leaving Tasmania.
Seven years down the track, the Sydney trainer is poised to make amends after her well-bred gelding Northwest Passage demolished a strong field in the $100,000 listed Kevin Sharkie Hobart Guineas over 2100 metres at Elwick on Sunday.
The Waterhouse-Adrian Bolt-trained gelding missed the start slightly but that turned out to be a blessing in disguise as he trailed the leaders Amaword and the Mick Price-trained Shadow Prince.
Local filly Life On The Wire made a sharp move from sixth at the 800m when the pace slackened but she was unable to round up the leaders and was caught wide to the home turn.
When rider Adam Hyeronimus called on Northwest Passage for the supreme effort in the home straight he burst clear and went on to defeat Life On The Wire by 7-½ lengths with Trusted Warrior a short head away third.
Stable representative Neil Paine said Northwest Passage would remain in Tasmania until the Derby on February 3.
Meanwhile, Geegees Goldengirl is on track to go one better than last year’s second in the Hobart Cup after a runaway win in the $50,000 Summer Cup.
Favourite Taiyoo, from the Darren Weir stable, broke a leg during the race and had to be put down.
