A fisherman contacted police about 8am after spotting a white pointer shark which he believed was between 12 and 15 feet long in Haunted Bay.
The last fatal attack in the area occurred in July 2015 when a scallop diver was killed in front off his daughter while diving between Lachlan Island and Maria Island.
It was the first fatal attack in Tasmania in 22 years.
