A half-century to Anish Paraam and contributions from multiple batsmen has Devonport in a strong position against Latrobe, while the Burnie Hurricanes and Ulverstone shared the opening day honours.
The Blues had no answers to Marshall’s brilliance at Wynyard Showgrounds.
The Mountaineers’ swing bowler claimed career-best figures of 7-18 from 13.2 overs to knock over Wynyard for just 68.
Things could have been worse for the Blues but for a 42-run third wicket partnership between Gregg Sharman (22) and Matthew Bowen (18), with no other players reaching double figures.
In a quality new-ball spell from Brodie Stokes (5-40), Sheffield lost four wickets before they passed the Blues’ score, but Richard Miles (67 not out) anchored the innings, guiding the Mountaineers to 9/178 and a 110-run first innings lead by stumps.
At West Park Oval, the Burnie Hurricanes won the toss and batted first, posting 179 against Ulverstone.
Brodie Hayes (57) and James Odgers (33) ground out patient innings against a disciplined Black Caps bowling attack led by veteran paceman Damien DeVries (3-38) and spinner James Smith (3-27).
Number three Nick Revell also chimed in with 26, but the loss of regular wickets hurt the Hurricanes’ cause.
Ulverstone lost two early wickets in reply, with Tyler Johns (2-14) claiming the scalps of Sam Lovatt (3) and Darren Banham (5).
It was then left to experienced pair Andrew Van Tatenhove (18 not out) and Josh Walmsley (11 not out) to steer the Black Caps to stumps, with the visitors finishing at 2/39.
After winning the toss at home, Devonport batted through to the stumps on day one, posting 9/269 against Latrobe.
All-rounder Anish Paraam produced another impressive performance, top scoring with a patient 55, while Brent Lawler scored a gritty 46 in his 100th game.
Tim Moore also batted well in his return to the first grade team, making 37 in an impressive Orions’ team batting effort. Micheal Bishop produced a tireless bowling performance for the Demons and was rewarded for his efforts, claiming 4-91 from 27 overs.
