The loss means Saturday’s return encounter is one they can not lose if they want to be part of the WBBL02 finals.
Mother Nature initially reduced the contest to 14-overs a side, with the Canes making 3-115 in that time, thanks to 45 from 39 from skipper Heather Knight and 39 from 29 from Amy Satterthwaite.
The rain returned when the Stars were 2-71, with the visitors then having a revised chase which meant they needed 20 from the final 12 balls.
This became 15 from the last over, with Jess Cameron hitting Satterthwaite for a six, a four off a no ball and then getting the run needed for victory off the final ball of the innings to gain the win.
The Hurricanes sit fifth, just one point behind fourth-placed Brisbane Heat, with all teams in the competition action tomorrow.
Saturday’s game against the Stars is at 11.45am.
