A celebrity pie eating competition and a lamington and pavlova bake-off judged by “local culinary experts” are at the forefront of the Australia Day celebrations being held at St Helens.

Does it get any more Australian? From 10am, Portland Memorial Hall, in Cecilia Street, will be abuzz with the January 26 celebrations. It will include live music from Pretty Little Things, jumping castles, face painting and a barbecue.
Recipients of the Young Citizen, Citizen of the Year and the Mayor’s Awards will be also be announced. The artwork competition winner will also be announced.
Beer, wine, cheese and fish burgers will aim to please. The event finishes at 2pm.
