And for the rest of us, we have a new world leader.
A major player in global politics who we didn’t vote for but were landed with.
Donald Trump – love him or hate him – his is here to stay for, at the very least, the next four years.
For me personally, I find the man vile. He frightens me and at times, disgusts me.
And he now has a global stage from which he can mock those with disabilities and brag about his ability to sexually assault women.
So how is it that millions of Americans actually voted for such a person?
How is it that millions of American women voted for this person?
Have we all missed something?
Many of us living outside of the US have admired Barack Obama and his family for almost a decade, and yet his approval rating among Americans was low. His wife Michelle was the only person in his entire administration whose popularity climbed instead of plummeting.
And now we look on in disbelief as Donald Trump takes the oath and becomes one of the world’s most powerful individuals.
From all I have seen and read, the overwhelming attractive characteristic of the man is the fact that he is not a politician.
He says what he feels. He acts the way he wants to. There is no watering down of his emotions – you know exactly where he stands.
We are not used to this brutal honesty from elected members. We are used to political correctness that makes us feel safe.
Complaining about our politicians is a favourite Australian past time and they can’t hit back – because that would not be appropriate.
Over and over they must cop it on the chin and make sure they manage any damage which could affect their bucket of votes.
Donald Trump doesn’t even seem to know what appropriate is. Movie stars, world leaders, the media, even his own intelligence community – he just won’t play the game.
If they cross him, he publicly takes aim and then throws the ball out of the park.
But then you look at his children who all appear to be loyal, articulate and street-smart human beings with professional accolades of their own.
Even Hillary Clinton in the heat of battle, conceded what exceptional young people they all were.
Did he just fluke having great kids? Was it solely the influence of their mothers? Or could he actually be a great dad?
Nothing ads up for me with this guy.
So many of his views make my blood boil, and I doubt I am not alone on this.
But like it or not, he is now the President of the United States of America and the leader of the free world.
