A strong 52-player field will tee off at Riverside Golf Club on Thursday with 24 from Victoria, ACT, New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland taking part.
Queenslander Mitchell Varley, who took out the Tamar Valley Junior Cup on Tuesday, will be the one to beat with Victorians Caleb Perry and Daniel Gill and South Australian Jack Buchanan closely behind.
Tasmanians Ryan Thomas (Prospect Vale), Gus Burrell (Kingston Beach), Brady Ludbey (Strahan) and Tim Smith (Tasmania) are the state’s top chances in the 72-hole event.
The event also includes the state girls amatuer championships with Tasmania Golf Club’s Zahara Lemon the hot favourite.
Lemon took also claimed victory at Greens Beach this week with Prospect Vale’s Lily Caelli, June Song, Casey Cook (NSW) and Sarah Wilson (QLD) expected to be her main rivals.
Golf Tasmania operations manager Stuart Eaton said the players would play 36 holes on both Thursday and Friday.
“It’s a bit of a test really as it is not easy to play 36 holes in one day let alone two days in a row,” Eaton said.
Conditions are predicted to be good for golf on Thursday with morning rain forecast for the final day’s play.
Tee-off is at 7.30am.
