The prestigious golf club will once again host a polo day on Saturday with three matches slated for the day.
It will be the third time the event has been held in Northern Tasmania and has grown in popularity each year.
Barnbougle Polo organiser Penelope Sattler said polo was often referred to as “the sport of kings” and the event offered a glamorous day out for the public.
“It’s just a really glamorous, social day out,” she said.
“It is beautiful to watch and it feels a bit regal and special.”
Polo is played with four mounted players on each team, with each individual competing under a handicap.
Players score by driving a small white plastic or wooden ball into the opposing team's goal using a long-handled mallet. The modern game lasts roughly two hours and is divided into periods called chukkas.
There will be three matches played at the event with the Spirit of Tasmania high score match starting at 3pm.
Mrs Sattler said polo had become popular as a social event because of its inclusive nature.
“You can stand around and watch the field closely and you can go onto the field when matches aren’t being played,” she said.
Crowd games such as tug-of-war and a sprint were also crowd-pleasers, Mrs Sattler said.
This year most of the players will be from the mainland with a couple of international players.
Mrs Sattler said there were some Tasmanian players but not many. In addition the players are mostly male, but there are a couple of female players.
All marquee tickets have sold out but there are still general admission tickets available.
BARNBOUGLE POLO STYLE GUIDE
Penelope Sattler gives a guide to how to dress up in style for Barnbougle Polo.
For the ladies:
- A floaty summer dress, cute romper, maxi skirt and structured crop top are all great options. Polo is a day event so avoid sequins and skintight ensembles and opt for a sophisticated, feminine look.
- Flat shoes are a-ok, in fact you would be better off leaving the stilettos at home. Walking on grass in six-inch heels is no fun for anyone, so take the opportunity to team your outfit with some stylish flats or cute wedges.
- Hats are perfect, fascinators less so. Keep your fascinator for the races and opt for a floppy straw hat or beautiful boater.
- Don’t forget to accessorise. Drop earrings, a statement bag or standout sunglasses are all great ways to add a little je ne sais quoi to your look.
- Keep your makeup fresh-faced and summery. It’s a day event so keep the eyeliner and smoky eye for the afterparty.
For the guys:
- Tailored shorts or Chinos paired with a button-up shirt is the perfect combo.
- Don’t be afraid of colour.
- No flip flops – try boat shoes, white sneakers or RM Williams.
- A linen shirt is fabulous. Shirts unbuttoned to the navel are less so. Remember, this is the game of Kings so keep it classy.
- Guys can also have fun with accessories. Think a statement watch and or sunglasses are a great way to add a point of different and keep your kit on point.
