The field includes Nathan Gatehouse, Mark Schulze and Paul Read from Tasmania Golf Club, Mitch Van Noord of Launceston, Sam Manix-Geeves from Riverside, Craig Garland of Royal Hobart, Elijah Stanley of Kingston Beach, Kurt Davies of George Town, Nathan Bakes of Deloraine and Peter Neilsen of Devonport.
A field of around 20 ladies have entered the 36-hole event and includes Sharon Crowden of Port Sorell, Kalynda Cowen of Penguin, Lou Proud of Devonport, Viv Hancock of Wynyard and Helen Plaister of Devonport. Entries close January 18.
After three rounds of the Tamar Valley Cup Junior Championships at Greens Beach, the leading Tasmanians are closely bunched headed by Gus Burrell from Kingston Beach whose steady golf has carded rounds of 78,80,77 for a total of 235.
On 236 is Ryan Thomas who returned 78, 82, 76 with Tim Smith of Tasmania next on 237 who had 79, 78, 80. James Fiddian of Prospect Vale continues to improve and is well placed on 238 after scores of 84,80 and 74. Caleb Perry of Warrnambool is the one to catch after rounds of 76, 71 and 76.
In the Girls’ section Zahara Lemon of Tasmania is equal leader after rounds of 72, 79 and 74 with Casey Cook of Tura Beach in New South Wales who carded 78, 74, 73. Royal Hobart’s Hallie Maeburn has played consistently to card 78, 79, 82.
A total of 13 girls and 39 boys from Tasmania and interstate will tee off on Thursday in the 72-hole Tasmanian Junior Masters at Riverside.
Tasmanian juniors will be especially keen to impress with selectors set to announce the Boys’ State Team to contest the Interstate Series in New South Wales in April.
Golf Tasmania recently sent Hallie Maeburn of Royal Hobart Golf Club and Mackenzie Wilson of Tasmania to the South Australian Junior Masters at Royal Adelaide.
Maeburn had rounds of 82, 90, 91 and Wilson carded 91, 91, 102 in the event won by Rebecca Kay of Coolangatta.
Ryan Thomas of Prospect Vale Golf Club did well in the boys’ section with scores of 73, 79, 79, and Royal Hobart’s Joey Bower had 83, 84, 82 with the event won by Andre Lautee of Kingston Heath.
Northern Foursome Championships for men and women over 27 holes will be played at Mowbray on Sunday February 5. Entries close on January 31.
A Junior Fundraising Golf Day at Riverside Golf Club on February 19 will raise funds to promote junior golf across the north.
