Tasmania’s leading junior surfer was of three winners on Sunday to take home dual East Coast Classic titles.
Davis swept aside the men’s open and under-21 field in a near unprecedented first at the opening to Surfing Tasmania’s State Open Surf Championships season.
Surfing Tasmania executive officer Shayne Clark said Davis showed why the best junior surfer “by a long way” is now on par with the state’s top open talent.
“The performance levels of young Rudy Davis is that he has not just natural talent, but he has the right physique – mid-size but a light build and he has very good skills,” Clark said.
Davis had edged out reigning state open champion Hamish Renwick amid the 1-1.5m swells on Sunday.
The surfing was switched from Scamander where it was cancelled on Saturday up the coast, near St Helens.
Bella Goward, also from Clifton Beach, followed Davis to claim the women’s open and under-21 wins.
Scamander’s Damon Hodge also proved victorious in the combined 35-40 and 45-50 aged groups.
“It was quite an unusual situation to have three dual winners,” Clark said.
“It’s setting up a very interesting season, particularly in the open section, with our dominant juniors starting to basically take over.
“It’s a new wave of top juniors climbing to the top of the heap.”
