Perry trailed Strahan’s Brady Ludbey by one shot overnight, but a second round 71 followed by a 77 secured him an impressive 10-over 223 entering the final 18 holes of the tournament.
But Ludbey’s opening 75 was long forgotten after he crashed and burned with a pair of 88 scores that left the Tasmanian hope an amazing 28 shots behind and out of contention.
Fletcher Stubbs, who shared the lead after the first 18 holes, still remains in contention after a solid 36 holes.
He carded 80 and 74 to trail Perry by six shots.
Victorians Caleb Bovalina and Daniel Gill were joined by Queenslander Mitch Varley in a share of second place.
Varley shot 72 and 76, Bovalina 73 and 76, and Gill 73 and 77 to all finish on 228.
Tasmanian Golf Club’s Zahara Lemon will have a fight on her hands to claim the girls’ title.
The overnight leader backed up her 72 to start with a 79 and finish with a better 74.
She was joined by Casey Cook from New South Wales in a share of the lead.
Cook, who started the day six shots off the pace, scored a brilliant 74 and 73 scores to join Lemon on 225.
Sarah Wilson had trailed by one stroke entering Monday, but she fell four behind by end of Tuesday.
The Queenslander went around in an 80 and 76 to remain four strokes behind the dual leaders.
Play continues on Tuesday.
