However, retailers are still expecting today's Boxing Day sales to draw in big crowds.
Retail Traders Association of Tasmania president Kieran Mills said the fact that Christmas trading was down 20 to 30 per cent this year was a bit scary.
But he said it wasn't that people were shopping online or buying on the mainland.
``People are just hanging onto their money,'' Mr Mills said.
Keeping with tradition many stores across Northern Tasmania will put up their sale signs for what Tasmania knows as the biggest sale period.
Myer Launceston store manager Michael Watson said between 12,000 and 14,000 people were expected to flood through the Brisbane Street store today after its 7am opening.
``Consumers know that Boxing Day is our biggest trading day of the year and that it's the day to look for a bargain,'' Mr Watson said.
``Across the store we'll have a great range of new offers ... with savings from 20 to 30 per cent right up to 50 and 55 per cent, and it will touch on every department.''
Launceston's Red Herring is also having a sale.
Store manager Hayley van den Tol said the store would open at 9am and would have 35 to 50 per cent off selected items as well as a $10 bargains table.
She said Boxing Day sales were important to assist the community.
``We need to keep this retail going up and up for our city,'' Ms van den Tol said.
CityProm chief executive Vanessa Cahoon said the Boxing Day sales were looking good again this year and many stores would offer bargains.
``Everyone that gets money for Christmas, we would love to see them in the city,'' Mrs Cahoon said.
Other Launceston stores participating in the Boxing Day sales include Mabella and Boy, Chloe Boutique, Jay Jays, Harris Scarfe, Harvey Norman, Your Habitat and many more.
