Jared Mattern and Chris Beechey are Evil Twin, and they’re in Tasmania this weekend for their Choppin’ Away tour.
Broken Blues is their upcoming release, set to come out early in 2017 through independent Melbourne label Off The Hip records.
Initially, the band headed into the studio to record an EP, but label owner Mick Baty had his eyes and ears set on a full-length release.
“I personally found it daunting when Mick said he wanted to release our latest songs, but only wanted to do an album and not an EP,” Beechey, drummer, said.
“But this isn't the first time this has happened our first release (Kill the Funk) was supposed to be an EP but once we were in the studio, the drums were recorded a lot quicker than we anticipated due to tracking live and we had other songs in the bag, so we decided to record them as well.
“I guess the difference with the latest recording was we had ideas for a few tracks but had to write some from scratch.
“The beauty of being a two-piece is we can actually write and arrange songs quite easily.”
The pair confessed that they take their influence from the blues side of the genre spectrum, and enjoyed operating as a “jam band”.
Both grew up in Launceston, but met when they were both living in Melbourne.
“(We were) both playing in separate bands at the time,” Beechey said.
“We decided to have a jam as we both were into the blues and ended up walking away that day with two songs.
“We thought we were onto something pretty catchy, fun to play and was musically different from our other bands.
“As we both had other bands on the go we started referring to this band as our Evil Twin and it stuck”
Mattern, vocals and guitar, said most of the songs were written in a single jam session, and just tweaked from there out.
“We approach our songs from a fairly simplistic perspective,” Mattern said.
“We tend to just write from our heads and not get to caught up in sticking with genres.
“We're surprised that we come up with so many variances in styles and be able to pull them off as a two piece live.”
Evil Twin will start their Tasmanian tour on January 6, at Hobart’s Brisbane Hotel.
They will play in Launceston on January 7, at Saint John Craft Beer Bar. Support is from Blackstone Dukes, and Cape Grim. The gig starts at 8pm, and entry is $10.
