This is the fifth year that the tree has been erected for Christmas.
It is a colloboration between the council, and Cityprom.
EARLIER: A South Australian man has sustained serious injuries after falling from the Christmas Tree in Launceston’s Brisbane Street Mall on Wednesday night.
Tasmania Police and emergency services were called to the scene about 11.30pm after receiving reports that the 33-year-old fell from the tree.
The man was transported to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a serious condition.
Robin Smith, owner of Coffee Republic, witnessed the fall.
“Two men climbed the tree. A first man fell, but got up. Then the second fell. The man's girlfriend was screaming at him to come down,” he said.
"I heard the fall, it was a horrible fall."
After the ambulance and police left and the man had been taken away, there was still blood and Mr Smith had taped up the gate but more people climbed into the fenced area.
He said there have been lots of incidents this year.
Police said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s five-metre fall.
Inspector Michael johnston said police would like to remind everyone to stay safe, especially when consuming alcohol.
“We want people to have fun but not put their lives, or other people’s lives at risk,” he said.
