Riverside Lions Carols by Candlelight chairman Michael Madden said organisers of the December 18 event were aiming to raise $25,000 from gate sales.
All money raised at the event is donated to The Examiner's Empty Stocking appeal, which is equally divided between four charities - the City Mission, St Vincent de Paul, The Salvation Army and the Benevolent Society.
Benevolent Society chief executive John Stuart said that this year was one of the hardest financially for families in Northern Tasmania.
``In just the first hour and 10 minutes this morning we saw 20 families needing help. The worst case was a 33-year-old woman with two children and she had a power bill of $1780,'' Mr Stuart said.
Mr Madden said that Riverside Lions Club members, who have organised the event for the past 31 years, spent about 500 hours putting the 2011 event together.
He said this year extra security had also been organised with security officers remaining at City Park until everyone had left.
The program this year will see the return of classic carols and feature performers such as Vox Harmony Choir, John de Jong and Di Briffa.
