In recent months council has received correspondence from a number of organisations and community members concerned by the presence of rubbish on municipal roadsides.

The Dunorlan turnoff and the Railton turnoff before Elizabeth Town in particular have become notorious for being littered with bottles, cans and fast food containers. 

The situation has led councillor Deb White to put forward a motion at Tuesday’s meeting, seeking to promote the proper disposal of rubbish in the municipality.

Cr White said she was disappointed that some community members considered it acceptable to dispose of rubbish out of the car window. 

“It’s bad and it’s getting worse,” Cr White said. 

“I'm not the only person to be noticing it, a lot of people are talking about it and a lot of people are worried about it.

“It’s bad for us as a community to have to look at the rubbish but it’s also very bad for visitors to be coming to our state and seeing rubbish by the roadside.”

The two-part motion seeks to publicly encourage community participation in next year’s Clean Up Australia Day, and in the process promote a culture of caring for the environment. 

It also proposes to erect new anti-littering signage in the municipality aimed at appealing to a younger demographic. 

Cr White said Clean Up Australia Day presented the perfect opportunity to reap localised benefits from a nationwide campaign.

“I thought it was a good time to do it and it happens to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Clean Up Australia Day so I thought that's a really good time for us to join in. 

“It seemed like a good way to go, rather than starting from scratch there's already a campaign in place and my motion is just making the most of that.”

Clean Up Australia Day will be held on March 5.
