Emergency crews were called to the incident where two cars had collided at the intersection of Vermont Road and Clare Street about 11.50pm Friday.
Four passengers in a red Mitsubishi Lancer station wagon were taken to the Launceston General Hospital for treatment.
Two women remained in a serious condition on Saturday afternoon and a man was reported as being stable.
The condition of the fourth passenger was unknown, but it is understood they were not admitted to the LGH.
The driver of a black sedan left the crash scene before police arrived and investigations into his identity are continuing.
Mayfield resident Tammy Barker was driving home from work when she came across the scene.
“Police [were] diverting traffic … the accident looked very horrific,” she said.
“I am very surprised anyone survived it to be honest, the ambulance had not arrived yet when I was there.
“It was very upsetting to see at this time of year and to hear someone left the scene. I hope the [driver] comes forward.”
Police appealed for witnesses who may have seen either of the cars being driven in the Mowbray or Ravenswood areas prior to the crash.
Anyone with information should contact Tasmania Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, which is able to be done anonymously.
